Debbie Dunbar

Stunning equestrian art from the studio of  artist Debbie Dunbar

The Horse Gallery

Debbie is a specialist equestrian artist, and enjoys trying to capture the essence of equines of all types and breeds. She is particularly well known for her paintings of Welsh Cobs, PRE (Andalusians) and other Baroque breeds, which are her particular passions in life, their extreme beauty, fire and expression have always attracted and excited her both as an artist and a horse enthusiast. She is also gaining a reputation for her ability to accurately represent driving horses and ponies. Below is a selection of her original horse paintings. Debbie is always willing to discuss commissioned work. Find out more on the commissions page or contact direct for more details. This is a selection of work which we hope you will enjoy.

“Oils have a superbly rich texture and quality to them that I love. When I paint I feel that I am almost sculpting with colour and light. I liken it to getting into the picture and modelling the horse in three dimensions, feeling the texture of the coat, looking at the way the muscles move, capturing the soul in the eye. What is he thinking? Which way will he move next? How does the light play on the colour of his coat? I like to paint in a “Chiaruscuro” style. This means that the light and dark in the picture is a vital part of projecting the atmosphere and mood of the moment. Chiaroscuro simply means Light and Dark. without this effect it is easy for a picture to look dull and lifeless, or a bit flat”
