the artist Debbie Dunbar with Section C stallion

Debbie was brought up in a small, traditional village near Rugby School in Warwickshire, and can hardly remember a time when she did not paint and draw animals. Even at a young age her life was dominated by horses and she has very fond memories of spending time with the pony that lived on the village green, sketching him and rewarding the “sitter” with bribes of carrots!

As a teenager She worked in exchange for riding lessons on a retired polo pony and it was in large part due to the support and encouragement of her much missed employer and friend Dorothy Balding (of the polo and racing family) that she  decided to pursue a career that combined her passion of art and horses. “Miss Balding” was her first patron, commissioning her to paint her favourite hunter mare when Debbie was just fourteen.

After gaining a degree in graphic design and illustration, and working in the graphics industry, She moved to beautiful West Wales, homeland of the Welsh Cob in 1986. Here, with all the inspiration an artist could ever wish for she now works on her art full time. Debbie is an Associate Member of the Society of Equestrian Artists.

Horses have always played a major role in Debbie’s life, from Silver, her first Welsh mountain pony when she was seven, working for a hunting family as their groom when she left school, right up to today, running Mochrum Stud of Welsh Cobs and Part Bred Horses in partnership with her husband, Gordon.
